Bringing history to life at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House!

Pupils and teachers from Cedar Mount Academy have been working with the House to produce a series of films which we launched at a popcorn, pizza and ice-cream premiere today.

Maria Ruban produced the films and our creative partner, enJOY arts jointly delivered the project with us.  

Over a series of sessions, both at the House and in school, the pupils have explored what it was like to live at 84 Plymouth Grove and discover more about Elizabeth Gaskell, her family and her friends. The pupils were encouraged to develop short dramatic scenes based on actual historical evidence, such as Elizabeth’s letters and Victorian objects using the restored Period Rooms.

The short film below goes through the keyhole at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, giving the viewer a unique insight into the House, Elizabeth and her family. Two other films have been created as a legacy for the pupils and to be used in learning sessions in the House and as a tool to train volunteers in how to work creatively with various audiences. The films are testament to the creativity, humour, enthusiasm and flair for performance the pupils brought to the project.
